Sarah Steelman Has Her Math Problems but Claire McCaskill Has Her Tax Problems

It looks quite funny at this point. The Democrats were quick to attack Sarah Steelman for her inability to do simple math. A day later, it is quickly forgotten about as that nagging little problem regarding use of Claire McCaskill's jet continues to haunt McCaskill.

American Crossroads released the following press release today regarding Claire and her tax problems:

The Truth About Claire: Will McCaskill Cede to Obama And Give Back Her Private Jet “Tax Break”?
President Obama, who previously travelled with McCaskill on her private jet, railed against private jet owners on Wednesday for not paying their fair share of taxes. Will private jet owner McCaskill cut a check to Uncle Sam or will Obama give her a free pass?

WASHINGTON – When President Obama railed against private jet owners at his press conference on Wednesday, did he mean to rail against one of his most ardent supporters in the U.S. Senate, Claire McCaskill?

No less than four times in Wednesday’s speech at the White House, Obama railed against private jet owners: “If we choose to keep those tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires, if we choose to keep a tax break for corporate jet owners, if we choose to keep tax breaks for oil and gas companies that are making hundreds of billions of dollars, then that means we’ve got to cut some kids off from getting a college scholarship.” (Wall Street Journal, June 29, 2011)

An ethics complaint was filed against McCaskill in March for her using taxpayer money to fly in her private jet from Washington, DC to St. Louis. While McCaskill reimbursed the government for the improper billing, it is unknown whether she took the tax break that Obama attacked in Wednesday’s speech, as she has repeatedly refused to open up her tax returns to the public.

“If McCaskill agrees with the president and yet takes the tax break for her private jet, she should immediately reimburse the federal government because according to Obama that tax break is keeping young Missourians from the chance to attend college,” said American Crossroads communications director Jonathan Collegio. “Because McCaskill has refused repeatedly to open up her tax records to voters, she needs to immediately tell Missourians whether she takes the tax break for private jets, and whether she will give that money back to the government,” continued Collegio.

Interestingly, Sen. McCaskill and Obama have traveled together on private jets before. In fact, McCaskill invited then presidential candidate Barack Obama to fly in her jet in 2008. According to a recent article in the Daily Caller:

Obama For America paid $3,938 to Sunset Cove Associates, LLC in West Lockwood, St. Louis, MO. Sunset Cove Associates was incorporated by McCaskill’s husband in 2002, and is the same company McCaskill’s campaign paid for her chartered air travel.  It is also the parent company of the Delaware-based Timesaver LLC.  Sunset Cove has received taxpayer dollars, while Timesaver LLC is the actual owner of McCaskill’s plane (which is registered in Delaware).
