Let Rush Limbaugh's appearance at Joplin be a celebration of the people of Joplin and those who have volunteered by their sides to help Joplin clean up after an EF 5 tornado hit on May 22. Rush's appearance should not be about government or political party, especially when you consider the facts. There will be an effort by the local Republican establishment led by an ethically challenged Congressman who promised to fight big government but soon embraced it in every way to hijack Limbaugh's appearance for their own political gain.
Let's not forget this same Congressman mocked tornado drills before this tornado hit. He co-sponsored legislation that would take HAM radio frequencies that first responders use to save lives for more federal government with an emergency broadband frequency that appears tied to the Internet kill switch.
While Rush clearly said:
I'm gonna tell you something else is gonna happen at Landreth Park in Joplin on Monday night: We're gonna grow the Republican Party. It's a Fourth of July celebration. We have the Harvard survey from yesterday: Fourth of July parades breed Republicans. Young kids at Fourth of July parties tend to end up being Republican. Fourth of July celebrations do not have any patriotic impact on Democrats. This is from a Harvard survey. We had it yesterday. Now, you Democrats, you can try to throw cold water all you want on what we're doing Monday night in Joplin, but I just want to remind you what's actually happening Monday night in Joplin, Missouri. Not only the continuing rebirth of a great community, and not only the joining of people coming together for a singular purpose (well, actually multipurpose) but we're also growing the conservative movement. (maniacal laughter) Try that!
There is a fact in Joplin right now that you can't miss. Republicans like Congressman Billy Long have embraced big government and have encouraged more big government to be the shoulders in Joplin. Which is sad for someone who ran on a fed up with big government platform. Both Long and Roy Blunt have asked for an increase in levels of funding from FEMA, and you can't go anywhere in Joplin without seeing the presence of big government. Each week I hear a little more complaints from residents who see how big government has taken over their city.
Of course there is something I learned while just barely still in my teens while listening to Rush. America rebuilds from tragedy with the sprirt of Americans and their charity and not big government pushing itself upon the people.
When Rush says this will have Republican overtones, we need to remember that it's been Republicans who have embraced big government in Joplin while quickly forgetting Ronald Reagan's nine scariest words. "I'm from the government and I'm here to help."
We need to grow Constitutional conservatives Rush, not Republicans in Southwest Missouri. Our Republicans are plenty big--bulging at the wasteband.
They just aren't conservative in the little r Constitutional way.
