While Philadelphia Relaxes Marijuana Laws, They Go Tyrannical With Text Messages

Philadelphia recently released stats that show the city saved $2 million for not prosecuting marijuana smokers that were busted with a small amount of pot. So potheads are no longer public enemy number one in the City of Brotherly Love.

Taking their place are the text messengers.

If you get caught texting and walking in Philadelphia, you are going to pay a fine. Advocates of the new text messaging fines point to a woman who was text messaging while walking and walked right into a mall fountain. The video went viral and the local government went out of control.

It's also bicyclist who will soon face fines as well. Not only will they not be able to text and ride, something I was very good at back in my racing days--including sending e-mails on one of the original smart phones before anyone knew what an iPhone was. The law is really going to come down on bicyclists.

Not only will they be cited for texting and riding, they are coming after them riding down the wrong side of the road. As someone who has been nearly assaulted by some ignorant person in a car while riding a number of times, I can understand the security that comes from riding facing traffic. Of course, it's rare for police officers to do much about those who threaten cyclists.
